John Wesley Charles
John W. Charles, Of Hamilton, Dies
John W. Charles, 78, of Hamilton, died this morning in the Adrian Hospital here following a brief illness.
Mr. Charles was born March 16, 1883, in Chest Springs, Cambria County, a son of Solomon and Sara James Charles. He was married to the former Melinda Mercer, who died in 1952.
He had lived in Hamilton the past 36 years and had spent most of his life in this area. He was a retired miner.
Surviving are three sons and a daughter: William Charles, of Punxsutawney R.D.4; Robert Charles and Mrs. Lawrence Johnston, both of Hamilton, and Richard Charles, of Valier. Surviving also are 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. John Bressler, of Curwensville.
Friends will be received in the Schenkemeyer Funeral Home after 7 o’clock tonight. Arrangements for funeral services have not been completed.

Vera Elizabeth Charles
INFANT DIES AT ANITA.
Vera Elizabeth, the 6-months-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Charles, of Anita, died last night at 8 o’clock. She was the survivor of twins, the other, a boy, died on the 21st of December.
Funeral services will be held in the First Presbyterian Church of Knoxdale, Thursday. Rev. A. J. Oridge, officiating.

Malinda Rebecca Mercer (Charles)
Mrs. John Charles Dies in Hamilton
Mrs. Malinda Charles, 72, wife of John W. Charles, of Hamilton, died in her home Tuesday after an illness of six weeks. She had resided in Hamilton the past 27 years.
A native of Knoxdale, the deceased was born September 18, 1879, the daughter of John D. and Elizabeth A. Freedline Mercer. Her marriage to Mr. Charles took place July 28, 1903.
Surviving are her husband, three sons and a daughter, William, of this city, and Mrs. Lawrence Johnston, Robert and Richard of Hamilton; a sister, Mrs. Ella Pierce, of Buffalo, N.Y., and 12 grandchildren.
Friends will be received in the Morrison Funeral Home after 7 o’clock this evening. The Rev. Delmar Probst will officiate at service there Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock, and interment will be in the Knoxdale Cemetery.

Carrie Wazelle (Charles)
Carrie M. Charles, 41
Carrie M. Charles,41, of Valier, died Thursday, September 10,1992 at DuBois Regional Medical Center West.
Mrs. Charles was born August 15, 1951 in New Kensington, the daughter of Robert and Annabelle (Kerr) Wazelle. She married Richard K. Charles Jr. on July 14, 1973.
She worked as a secretary for the Charles Appliance Center of Valier. She was a member of the Women of the moose Chapter 825 of Punxsutawney and the First Church of God. She lived most of her life in this area.
She is survived by her husband, Richard K. Charles Jr.; two daughters: Mrs. Dwayne (Tammara) Wort of Florence, Colorado, and Tracy Charles, at home; three sons: Robert Charles, serving with the U.S. Army at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo., Gary Charles, at home, and Richard Charles III, at home; a granddaughter; her mother, Mrs. Annabelle Wazelle of Valier; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Roseann Mowrey of Punxsutawney; two brothers: Jeffrey Wazelle of Lewistown and Robert Wazelle of Big Run; and four sisters: Mrs. Jerry (Ginger) Kellogg of Erie, Mrs. William (Ann) Bouch of Rossiter R.D. 1, Mrs. Douglas (Carol) Bowers of Punxsutawney R.D. 4, and Mrs. Thomas (Sharon) Barnett of North East.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday at the Deeley Funeral Home of Punxsutawney. The Rev. Ryan Chapman will officiate. Interment will be at Valier Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
The family has suggested that memorial may be made to the First Church of God.

Allen Kelsey (The Punxsutawney Spirit — February 1903)
Allen Kelsey
Allen Kelsey, an aged and highly respected citizen of Porter township, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elisha Barnett, where he had made his home for a number of years. His death resulted from a fall on the previous Tuesday by which his hip bone was broken. He was in the eighty-fifth year of his age, and but for this accident might have lived several years longer. Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 14, Rev. Shindledecker, of Ringgold, officiating. Interment in Zion church yard.
The deceased was born in Westmoreland county, and came to this county in his youth. His wife died about six years ago. Three sons and three daughters, 54 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren survive him.
Death of Allen Kelsey
Lawshe, Feb. 18 – The funeral of Mr. Allen Kelsey took place from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elisha Barnett in Porter, Jefferson county on Saturday Feb. 14, where he had been spending the winter. He had not been in good health for a number of years owing to his extreme age. Although not hearty he was not considered so near the end of life until within a few days of his death which occurred on Feb. 14 from infirmities of age and an attack of kidney trouble. He was born in Westmoreland county in 1819, being 84 years of age. his wife died six years ago and five children preceded the father, while six yet remain, three sons, three daughters, forty-one grandchildren and thirty-five great grandchildren are left to mourn the loss of a loved parent. He was followed to his last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives. Burial in the Zion M. E. cemetery, six grand sons being the pall bearers, namely Milton Shranger, John Kelsey, Samuel Mauk, Charles Barnett, David Smith and Allen Smith. There were many friends from a distance in attendance at the funeral among whom were his son David and family of Strattonville, Wm. Shrock of Bingham, John Kelsey of Strattonville, Daniel Barnett of Punxsutawney, Mrs. Wm Hallman of near Curwensville and David Smith of Maysville.
